This painting features Babe, a young donkey whose life began under incredibly difficult circumstances. Babe’s mother, Sylvia, was rescued from an auction while pregnant, along with her sister Beatrice, who was also expecting. Both were extremely sick and malnourished, suffering from wounds, nasal discharge, and suspected lung infections. Our team worked quickly to stabilize them and help them feel safe before their babies arrived.

Kate was born first, strong and healthy. When Babe was born, however, there were immediate concerns. She would not nurse, and Sylvia became unable to stand. Both were rushed to UC Davis, where they spent a week receiving intensive care. Sylvia was diagnosed with post foaling laminitis, a painful and serious condition. Despite every effort and a brief improvement, Sylvia never fully recovered, and her pain eventually became too great. We made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to her.

Babe spends her days with her aunt Beatrice and cousin Kate. The three of them are healing together. After Sylvia passed away, we really spoiled Babe with love and attention. She soaked it all up and is now doing really well. She loves hanging out with her favorite people.

Kate’s mom, Beatrice, struggles with her health, particularly in her feet. Because of this, she will always live at Oscar’s Place, where she can receive special care. Since we don’t split up bonded families, Kate and Babe will also be here as long as Beatrice is.

Melisa spent time with Babe, getting to know her gentle personality and powerful story before capturing it in this original piece.

This piece is perfect for animal lovers, collectors of meaningful art, or anyone who believes in second chances. Only one is available. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
